Strategic and Business Planning Workshop Facilitation and Implementation

Strategic Plan
It is important that your Club has a Strategic Plan. It is a blueprint prepared by the Board to guide the club forward and to achieve its long term objectives. It is about goal setting and planning for long term viability. Remember it is Strategic, definitely not operational.

There is no hard and fast rule about how to do a Strategic Plan. However it does require input from Board members so a planning day may be needed to get the plan started.  There may be some preliminary consultation with key stakeholders.

You should consider your Mission statement (What is our purpose?), and your Vision statement. (What will we look like in the future?)

A SWOT analysis is a great planning tool.

  • Strengths
  • Weaknesses
  • Opportunities
  • Threats

As part of the Strategic plan you will identify some measurement tools to get feedback, and you will set achievable but important deadlines for the agreed actions.

The Board is responsible for implementing the Strategic Plan and reviewing it. The Board would usually delegate the necessary tasks to the CEO/Manager. Delegate is different from abdicate. The Board remains responsible.

The Strategic Plan needs to be a living document. The Board will refer to it regularly to ensure Board goals are implemented within agreed time frames. There should also be a full review workshop every few years.

Business Plan
The business plan evolves when management and the rest of the team document how they will go about implementing the Strategic Plan. It is not the role of the Board. Business plans can be short term, although some components will endure.
